Monday 15 December 2014

Outing is cancelled...

Unfortunately, due to a change in the swimming scheduling, there is no longer a public swim open at the Kinsmen Sportsplex from 1-4pm. We will brainstorm tomorrow to decided what is it that we will do for a reward.

My sincere apologies,

Mme Rogers

Week of December 15 - 19

FLA - Christmas Letter to Reading Buddy et vocabulaire
As classes wind up for the holidays, we will look at a review of how to write a friendly letter. We will practice this skill by writing a friendly Holiday letter to our reading buddies in Mme Burnham's grade 2 class. We then give the letters to them on Thursday.

We will also be working on Christmas themed vocabulary and French speaking activities.

ELA - Figurative Language/Vocabulary
We will be working on Figurative Language using a Christmas theme.

Math - Integers/Order of operations
TEST! There will be a unit test on Thursday December 18th. To prepare for the test, students will be starting a review a Tuesday. The review should be completed for homework so that we can look at correcting and clearing up any confusion on Wednesday.

Sciences Humaines - Geography
We will be looking at how the holidays are celebrated all around the world. I will give the students a Mini-Research project to do this week.

Let's celebrate our accomplishments!

At the beginning of the school year, my students and I agreed on a monthly challenge. This challenge includes wasting AS LITTLE time as possible during each school day. Our class is allotted 1 minute per school day of wasted time, that ends up being 20 minutes per month. We all agreed that 20 minutes of wasted time per month is PLENTY!

I challenge them to stay under that 20 minutes and they have done so EVERY month so far! CONGRATULATIONS!!!

In previous months, we have all celebrated together in a potluck/movie/games afternoon. This month, the grade 7 & 8's came together and decided to have our reward afternoon combined with our holiday celebration.

Below is our itinerary for Friday December 19th:

AM - Holiday movie of their choice...if you have any movies that you would be willing to lend to our class, that would be greatly appreciated!

Lunch - Lunch has been generously offered to us by the National Café. Adrianna Stadnyk's grandfather has agreed to deliver piping hot Chinese food for our class at a minimal charge of $5.00
**Please send $5.00 with your child on Friday, December 19th.**

PM - During the afternoon, we all agreed that we would walk to the Kinsmen Sportsplex and go swimming. The cost is fully covered by Palliser Heights School. Those not wanting to swim, may sit out with me and play board games in the viewing area of the pool.

I will be sending home permission slips to be signed tomorrow. Please return them with your child or email me permission confirmation by Thursday, December 18th.

Should you have ANY questions regarding ANY information, please feel free to email me at rogers.tiffany@prairiesouth.ca.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

Mme Rogers

We Day!

We Day Website

What is We Day?

Youth coming together to make the world a better place is the global movement of our time—We Day is this movement.
An annual series of stadium-sized events, We Day brings together world-renowned speakers and performers—from Malala Yousafzai and Martin Sheen to Demi Lovato—with tens of thousands of youth to kick-start a year of action through We Act. You can’t buy a ticket to We Day—you earn it by taking on one local and one global action.
More than a one-day event, We Day is connected to the year-long We Act program, which offers educational resources and campaigns to help young people turn the day’s inspiration into sustained action. We Day and We Act are cause inclusive, empowering young people to find their passion and create the change they want to see. By taking action on one local and one global cause, students are equipped with the tools to succeed academically, in the workplace and as active citizens.
Together, We Day and We Act are a blueprint for helping the next generation of global citizens.
**Palliser Heights School has been invited to attend We Day this Friday November 7th, 2014 in Saskatoon. Mr. Gallagher and I will be accompanying select students to We Day. Halloween Reminder

Just a reminder to discuss with your children that tomorrow’s afternoon dress-up must be school appropriate:

-no fake blood

-no fake weapons

-no extreme gore

-no face paint

For tonight’s middle years dance:

This is a separate event. Costume choice is left up to discretion of the parents.

Those students who also choose to dress up on Friday afternoon at school must follow the above rules.

HALLOWEEN!

Dear Parents,

This year at École Palliser Heights School we will be celebrating Halloween.  As a staff, we agreed that students should be allowed to dress up and celebrate Halloween in a positive way while at school.

We have several suggestions for parents to consider when planning for these festivities.  Please select a costume for your child that is easy to change into after lunch and does not support violence.  Pretend blood or play weapons will not be permitted.  Students are asked not to wear masks or come to school with face paint.

Our class will be having a Halloween party in the afternoon.  As it has gone over sooooo incredibly  well in our class, we will be doing another potluck lunch followed  by an afternoon of karaoke and board games!

With your help, we will enjoy a fun and safe holiday with your children.  Thanks for your support and involvement.

****If you choose not to send a costume, your child is more than welcome to dress in orange, black or purple.

"In a million words or less..."

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the homework assignments that I have received from you all. It has been such a privilege getting to know your child in the classroom. It adds so much to getting to know a child when you get to see who the child is through their parents eyes. I am going to be honest, your words brought me to tears many times, don't worry, happy tears.
I am really looking forward to this year.

P.S. I know you are all very busy, but those of you who haven't completed the "assignment", I would REALLY love to hear from you as well...

Have a wonderful Thursday evening.

Mme Rogers
